5 Freeway near East Los Angeles reopens after deadly shooting investigation

An investigation continues Friday into a fatal suspected road rage shooting that left one man dead and another man wounded on the 5 Freeway.
The deadly car-to-car shooting forced the California Highway Patrol to close all northbound lanes of the freeway near East Los Angeles Thursday afternoon.
Just after midnight, all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were reopened.
Officers said the deadly encounter happened between two people, one in a dark-colored Dodge Durango and the other in a gold Cadillac sedan. At least one other car also appeared to have its rear window shattered.
The two cars were driving up the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway when the Cadillac rear-ended another vehicle at about 4:10 p.m. Thursday near the Lorena Street overpass, according to the CHP.
After stopping nearby, two men from the Dodge Durango exited their vehicle and started shooting at the two men inside the Cadillac. The driver was able to make a U-turn on the freeway but eventually crashed into other vehicles before coming to a stop.
Immediately after opening fire, the two suspects ran back to their car and drove away.
Crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department took the driver to the hospital where he remains in surgery, according to the California Highway Patrol. The passenger died on the freeway.
Authorities continue to search for the two suspects.
